Webinar: Invitation to discuss themes for WBio2022

In the spirit of collaboration among the organization partners of the WBio2022, with the GIZ support and the special participation of the Post 2020 Biodiversity Framework – EU support, the organizers through ACIA (Associação Cunhambebe) would like to invite you to join this webinar on 11 May from 09:00 to 13:00 BRT to discuss the structuring themes in preparation for the WBio2022 – scheduled for June, 07 to 09, 2022 (Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil & on-line).

Supporting the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity, reinforcing the Edinburgh Process and the role of local & subnational governments (L&SNGs), linking advocacy and on the ground actions, the objective of WBio2022, a long-term process, is to identify transformative biodiversity governance initiatives from local and subnational governments addressing initial five structuring themes – allowing the future development of projects.

Thus, identifying such structuring themes is an essential step to achieve the WBio2022 goals, paving the road for COP15 – sharing the journey with other important achievements, such as the draft recommendation to CBD COP 15 Part 2 on Engagement with Subnational Governments, Cities and Other Local Authorities to enhance implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework (CBD/SBI/3/L.16). This recommendation includes a 10-year Plan of Action on Subnational Governments, Cities and Other Local Authorities.

In this webinar, considering the scenario of many years implementing the Plan of Action, we would like to count on your own expertise to coproduce the themes to be addressed in WBio2022. As the final outcome of the webinar, the participants will also contribute with the program of the WBio2022.

The timing is perfect – the UN Decade of Action invites us to adapt and implement solutions using participatory approaches! Having in mind that we are dealing with a wide range on partners – improving the chances for the urgent implementation of the CBD and increasing the number of L&SNGs sharing efforts and outcomes!

Products of this meeting: Firstly, the discussions will contribute to the development and definition of the initial five structuring themes in preparation for the WBio2022. Secondly, we will refine the basis for a tentative WBio2022 program.

Participants: Associação Cunhambebe (ACIA), SIMA-SP, CETESB, Fundação Florestal, Secretariat of the CBD, Post 2020 Biodiversity Framework – EU support, GIZ, ICLEI, Regions4 and others.

There is a suggestion of 5 initial central themes, to be evaluated and reviewed in this Webinar – crossing with the CBD Major Groups and partners, under the climate change, benefit-sharing and wetlands lens: youth, women, IPLC, NGO, Business & UN Agencies.
1. Governance, communication, technology transfer & capacity building, and environmental education;
2. Cities – pilots on Nature-based Solutions, Ecosystem-based Approaches and ecosystem
restoration;
3. Ecosystem Services, Green&Blue Economy & Finance instruments to leverage increased funding for, and investment in, local and landscape level biodiversity actions and projects;
4. Protected Areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) – highlighting pilots on Oceans and Coasts; and
5. Science – pilots on Tropical Forests, mainly on restoration, botany, primates, reforestation and urban forestry & agriculture, and nature sensitive renewable energy.

Every theme is being evaluated considering some criteria, like
(i) the potential to be ready to be launched at COP15/P2;
(ii) is recognized as locally relevant to implementing the CBD;
(iii) links with on the ground interventions supporting the implementation of the CBD; and
(iv) is integrated as part of the CBD GBF context.

No espírito de colaboração entre os parceiros de organização do WBio2022, com o apoio da GIZ e a participação especial do Post 2020 Biodiversity Framework – EU support, os organizadores, por meio da ACIA (Associação Cunhambebe), convidam você para fazer parte deste Webinar em 11 de Maio, de 09:00 até 13:00 BRT, para debater os temas estruturantes em preparação para o WBio2022 – agendado para 07 a 09 de junho, 2022 (São Paulo, SP, Brasil & virtual).

Apoiando a implementação do Marco Global de Biodiversidade (GBF) da Convenção sobre Diversidade Biológica (CDB), reforçando o Processo de Edimburgo e o papel de governos locais e subnacionais (L&SNGs), unindo estratégias de promoção e ações de campo, o objetivo do WBio2022, um processo de longo prazo, consiste em identificar iniciativas transformadoras de governança em biodiversidade de governos locais e subnacionais focando cinco temas estruturais iniciais – permitindo o futuro desenvolvimento de projetos. Portanto, identificar estes temas estruturais é um passo essencial para atingir as metas do WBio2022, pavimentando a Estrada para a COP15 – compartilhando a jornada com outras importantes conquistas, como o rascunho de recomendação para a Fase 2 da COP 15 da CDB sobre o Envolvimento de Governos Subnacionais, Cidades e Outras Autoridades Locais para reforçar a implementação do Pós-2020 Marco Global de Biodiversidade (CBD/SBI/3/L.16). Esta recomendação inclui um Plano de Ação para Governos Subnacionais, Cidades e Outras Autoridades Locais de 10 anos.

Neste Webinar, considerando o cenário de vários anos implementando o Plano de Ação, contamos com sua própria experiência para coproduzir os temas que serão debatidos no WBio2022. Um dos produtos finais do Webinar consiste em uma seleção de contribuições de seus participantes para o programa do WBio2022. O momento é ideal – a Década da ONU para Ação nos provoca a adaptar e implementar soluções fazendo uso de abordagens participativas! Tendo em mente que lidamos com um amplo espectro de parceiros – otimizando as chances para a urgente implementação da CDB e incrementando o número de L&SNGs compartilhando esforços e resultados!

Produtos deste encontro: Em primeiro, as discussões vão contribuir para o desenvolvimento e a definição de cinco temas estruturantes iniciais para a preparação do WBio2022. De maneira complementar, será refinada a base para o programa tentativo do WBio2022.

Segue uma sugestão de 5 temas centrais iniciais, para que sejam avaliados e revistos neste Webinar – cruzando com os grupos em destaque na CDB e com parceiros, sob as lentes climáticas, de repartição de benefícios e de áreas úmidas: juventude, mulheres, populações indígenas e comunidades locais, ONG, negócios e agências da ONU.

1. Governança, comunicação, transferência de tecnologia e capacitação, e educação ambiental;
2. Cidades – pilotos em Soluções baseadas na Natureza, Abordagens baseadas em Ecossistemas e restauração de ecossistemas;
3. Serviços Ecossistêmicos, Economia Verde&Azul e instrumentos financeiros para alavancar o financiamento para, ou investimento em, projetos e ações locais de biodiversidade em escala de paisagem;
4. Áreas Protegidas e outros mecanismos efetivos de conservação baseados em território (OECMs) – destacando pilotos em oceanos e áreas costeira; e
5. Ciência – pilotos em Florestas Tropicais, especialmente em restauração, botânica, primatas, agricultura e florestas urbanas, e energia renovável amigável à natureza.

Cada tema está sendo avaliado considerando critérios como:
(i) Potencial para pronto lançamento na COP15/P2;
(ii) Ser reconhecido como localmente relevante para implementação da CDB;
(iii) Apresente integração com intervenções de campo apoiando a implementação da CDB; e
(iv) Esteja integrado como parte do contexto do Pós-2020 da CDB.
